WHAT IS THE CAPITAL CITY AFRICA WEEK FESTIVAL
The Capital City Africa Week Festival celebrates the diversity and richness of Africa through a series of cultural, economic and sporting events presented in the U.S. nation’s capital. The Festival will focus on fostering economic engagement, cooperation and investment in critical sectors such as health, infrastructure, energy, agribusiness and digital.
The week will be anchored by the inaugural “Capital City Africa Cup”, played this year between the Ghanaian Men’s Premier League Team winner, Medeama SC, and the DC United Men’s Major League Soccer (MLS) Team at Audi Field in the city of Washington. The game will bring sports to the forefront as an important connective tissue that binds us and provides a critical platform for celebration, shared values and amplification of diaspora ties.
Ghana is serving as the inaugural visiting country in 2023, but future years will highlight different African nations.
MEET THE TEAMS
D.C. United has a rich history in MLS and has been one of the most successful teams in the league’s early years, winning multiple MLS Cup championships and other titles.
Throughout its history, D.C. United has been one of the most successful teams in MLS. The team has won multiple MLS Cup championships, claiming the title in 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2004. D.C. United has also secured the Supporters’ Shield, an annual award presented to the MLS team with the best regular-season record, multiple times.

Medeama SC are the 2022-23 champions of Ghana! Established in 2008, Medeama believe in the hybrid of development of talented kidsand purchase of experience players to compete at the top level in Ghana and in Africa. Despite being relatively young in the Ghanaian top-flight, Medeama have won the famous FA Cup twice, beating local giants Asante Kotoko twice to win the title. Medeama have earned a top-four-finish on two occasions in five years and is a powerhouse in Ghana football.
